Project Dubia Dawn: A 6-month Dubia Roach Breeding Experiment

đź§ŞSubject Species: Blaptica dubia (Dubia Roach)


đź§ŞObjective: To determine minimal parameters to establish a healthy, thriving breeding population


đź§ŞInitial Colony Acquisition- The Founding Specimens- Gen 0

  • Began with approx. 40 adult Dubias, with a 1:3 male to female ratio.


đź§ŞHousing:

  • Questionable lab-grade (I.e. Costco) tub, dimensions 25"x 16", advertised as 27 gallon

  • Modifications:

    • 5 medium ventilation "windows" cut Into the lid, covered with screen mesh

    • 3 large reptile-branded heat mats mounted on Interior walls, each connected to their own thermostat for temperature regulation. Access portals for the thermostat cables were drilled Into the lid.- FAIL

    • Each mat was protected with a mesh screen aquarium lid to prevent direct contact with the test subjects- FAILED


đź§ŞAmmenities:

  • Gridded food dish (purchased from Dubia Roach) for climbing accessiblity

  • Secondary solid dish offering assorted grains

  • Third dish containing hydration crystals, modified for ease of In and out access

  • Humidity blanket (I.e moistened paper towel), meticulously shoved In the corner, suspended above the hydration crystals- FAIL


đź§ŞDiet:

  • The colony was provided with a carefully curated laboratory diet consisting of:

    • Fresh leafy greens 🌿

    • Assorted vegetables and fruit 🥕

    • Formulated dubia roach nutrition blend 🧬

  • Water crystals đź’§



đź§ŞObservations:


Climate Control Trials: Operation 90°F

Dubia roaches are tropical creatures, so the colony was maintained at an internal temperature of approximately 90°F using three interior-mounted heat mats.

Scientifically speaking, the roaches appreciated the warmth.

Engineering-wise… the setup became a little more complicated.

The three heat mats required thermostat wiring to enter the enclosure, which meant drilling outlet holes into the lid. Screen aquarium lids were installed as a protective barrier between the roaches and the heating elements.


Theoretically: excellent containment protocol.


Practically: The Dubias immediately began searching for loopholes.


Despite the screens, several determined individuals managed to squeeze between the barriers and become trapped against the heat mats. The incident revealed an important research finding:

Dubia roaches have an impressive capacity for structural infiltration.

An additional discovery was made during routine observation: The thermostat wires themselves became a convenient climbing route. Several adventurous roaches successfully ascended the cables and reached the upper regions of the enclosure.


This was scientifically fascinating.


It was also extremely unsettling.


Researchers were alarmed and forced to suppress their anxiety at opening the enclosure, as they did not expect this ground-dwelling species to be lurking near the top of the containment lid.


Unexpected Observations: The Tiny Hydration Enthusiasts

The youngest members of the colony introduced another research challenge: Baby Dubias seeking refuge In the hydration stations.

The water crystals, originally provided as a safe moisture source, became a popular gathering location for newborn roaches. Unfortunately, this meant regular "baby roach fishing expeditions" were required to remove tiny subjects from the gelatinous hydration pools.

The young roaches also showed a strong preference for the moist paper towel section of the enclosure. NOTE- Crumpled, moist paper towel shoved In the corner proved unsustainable, as It would frequently topple over onto the ground or In the hydration crystal dish, Increasing mold and pathogen potential. Must find more sophisticated method.


Conclusion:

Baby dubias enjoy humidity, moisture, and anything that resembles a tiny tropical spa.


First Harvest Report: June 2026

After six months of observation, the first harvest inspection was performed.

The results were encouraging.

The colony appeared healthy and active, with strong signs of reproduction and a thriving population structure. The founding specimens had successfully established a functioning miniature ecosystem.

The experiment was officially classified as:

Habitat Redesign: Phase 2 Improvements

Every good laboratory adjusts based on observations, and the Toad Lab team identified several improvements for the next phase.


1. Horizontal Harborage Configuration:

The original vertical harborage arrangement was redesigned into a more horizontal layout.

Benefits observed:

  • More open floor space

  • Improved access for feeding

  • More room for dedicated water and humidity stations

  • Hydration blanket secured In dedicated chamber

  • Easier colony observation

The goal is to create a more organized "roach research facility" rather than a chaotic stack of tiny cardboard apartment towers.

2. Removal of Interior Heating Elements

The interior heating system has been retired after the cable-climbing incidents and heat-mat containment breaches.

The new plan:

Move heating elements outside the enclosure.

This should eliminate:

  • Roach contact with heating surfaces

  • Cable escape routes

  • Unplanned rooftop colonies

The remaining question:

Will external heating provide enough warmth for optimal breeding temperatures?

Future observations will determine whether the colony prefers the new climate arrangement or files a complaint with the laboratory administration.


đź§ŞCurrent Research Status

The Dubia Dawn Project has demonstrated that Blaptica dubia are:

  • Hardy

  • Productive

  • Excellent recyclers of vegetable matter

  • Surprisingly clever at breaching barriers

  • Extremely enthusiastic about moisture sources

The next research phase will focus on optimizing temperature control, improving enclosure design, and expanding the colony while maintaining a clean and efficient miniature ecosystem.


🧪Final Lab Note: The Dubia roach may not win any beauty contests, but as a research organism it is impressive: Resilient, fascinating, and perfectly adapted to life as one of nature’s tiny recycling machines.
